Customize Your Facebook URL for Your Page

Tip #369 - Customize Your User Name

Dear Tip of the Weeker,

Now that you have your Facebook Fan page for your retail store (see Tips #366 and #368) you should register for your customized Facebook URL - Facebook calls them "User Names."

When you first create your store Fan page it will be assigned a random ID number and that number is what will show up in the URL for your page name. It's long, ugly, and not easy to remember or type.

A custom User Name is simple to remember and will help your customers find you more easily on Facebook.

For example, the User Name for our Fan page is: www.facebook.com/WhizBangTraining.

You know exactly where you are going to end up when you click.

To get your own customized URL for your store's fan page, go to www.facebook.com/username. On this page you will have the option of creating a custom User Name for both your personal Facebook profile and AND your business Fan page.

The name you choose for your Fan page should ideally be your business name. But if you have a popular retail store name or are part of a franchise it could already be taken by someone else. If that is the case, try putting a dot between the words - my.store - or adding your city name - MyStoreAtlanta - or both my.store.atlanta.

Once you have your custom User Name, be sure to use that link when you invite your customers to Fan your page. Add it to your regular email signature. Include it in every one of your email newsletters. Put it on your website. The more you spread it around, the more fans you will get!

Here's another suggestion, on our page www.facebook.com/WhizBangTraining  we set up a discussion thread so you can leave your Fan page link for other retailers. They can fan your page and they can leave their link so you can fan them. When you become a fan of other retailers you can see what they are doing on their pages and get some good ideas for your own page. Or discover some things to avoid...

Have fun on Facebook!

Wishing you great sales and lots of fun,

Bob Susan
