Personal Management Tip for Retail Store Owners

Tip #428 - The Power of One

Dear Tip of the Weeker,

Retail store owners like you wear lots of hats: salesperson, buyer, bookkeeper, visual merchandiser, manager, financial planner, social media specialist, corporate cleaning service, PR manager, human resource person, graphic designer, special event planner, and more!

It's all got to get done, but how?

Just like the old joke about how to eat an elephant, you do it ONE bite at a time.

Trying to focus on too many projects or wear too many hats at one time doesn't work. Our human brains don't like it. In fact, there was a study done in England which concluded that multi-taskers suffered a greater loss of productivity than pot smokers!

Decide on the NUMBER ONE most important thing that you should do to improve your business. What's going to result in the maximum impact, the maximum profits, the maximum fun?

Focus your efforts and attention for a day (or a week, or a month) on that ONE thing.

If you've decided that starting an email newsletter is critical for increasing sales, don't add cleaning out the hold bin and creating an open-to-buy spreadsheet to your to-do list. They'll just be vying for your time and attention. Work on the email newsletter until it's done and then pick the next ONE most important thing to do.

You'll be amazed at the power of focusing on ONE thing, the most important thing, and how it will transform your business!

By the way, this concept will work wonders for your staff, too.  What is the ONE thing they can do to increase sales or improve your customer experience? Add on? Greet each customer within 30 seconds? Write a personal thank you note?

Get them focused on that ONE thing until it's a habit, and then move on to the next ONE thing.

Wishing you great sales and lots of fun,

Bob Susan
