How a Retail Store Owner can Build a Great Team

Tip #360 - Who's Your Ideal Employee

 Dear Tip of the Weeker,

It's that time of year again, when many of you will be hiring seasonal employees for your stores. Hiring can take a lot of time and effort (believe me, we know) but it is so important to invest in building a great team.

Here's an excerpt from the Retail Mastery System that explains how to begin the process:

Creating a great staff full of superstar employees is one of your most important jobs as a retail store owner or manager. Your employees are the people who are standing face-to-face with your customers every day and bringing, or failing to bring, money into your business. They are either giving, or failing to give, the quality service your customers deserve.

Fortunately, developing an amazing staff isn't rocket science - but it doesn't happen by accident. It's a step-by-step process leading from one step to the next until you have a team full of superstars.

Your very first step in developing a WhizBang! Staff is creating an Ideal Employee Profile. You can't find and hire amazing employees if you don't have a very clear concept of who that person is. You're more likely to hit the target if you're aiming for the target.

Think about your perfect employee... What would he or she be like? This person probably doesn't really exist, because we are all just human after all. But in your most ideal world, who would you like to have in the position you are hiring for?

If you are a store that sells window treatments, are you ideally looking for a skilled interior designer with a contemporary flair who never makes a mistake measuring and is a selling machine?

If you are a pet store, do you ideally want an animal lover not afraid of handling snakes, frogs, or spiders, who is meticulously neat and can use a computer to put together the store newsletter?

Brainstorm a list of all the important characteristics, skills, and qualities your ideal employee should have. Write them down. Be specific about the qualities you are looking for. Include characteristics that will differentiate the perfect employee for YOUR store from the rest of the crowd. Everyone wants an employee that's friendly, honest, and enthusiastic. What is special about the person who is absolutely PERFECT for your job?

That's what we do and that's why we have a great group of superstars here at WhizBang! Training.

Wishing you great sales and lots of fun,

Bob Susan
