Tip #31 - Build A Better Business Card

We love business cards. Give them out like popcorn. It’s a low cost way to keep your name in front of your customers - and potential customers.

Here’s a great way to get more out of that little 2” X 3 ½” piece of paper.

PUT A MESSAGE ON THE BACK OF YOUR BUSINESS CARDS

Yes, you’ll have to pay to have them printed on both sides, but use the space wisely and it will be money incredibly well spent.

If you make that card more interesting, valuable, informative, or useful, your customers are more likely to hang on to it. If you do a really good job with your message, it will cause your customer to interact with you again – and deepen their relationship with you and your business.

Here are nine fun ideas that you can use to spice up the back of your business card...

Invite your customers to:
  • Visit your web site and enter a contest.
  • Come in for a free cookie.
  • Give the card to a friend - if the friend buys, the original customer gets a $5 gift certificate.

Offer:
  • A tip on using your products.
  • A fun fact about your business, your product, or yourself.
  • A useful chart, graph, or table relating to your business.

List:
  • Interesting web sites related to your product or service.
  • Your personal “best picks” of merchandise (remember the video store?) Encourage customers to collect the entire team’s business cards with their personal picks on the back.
  • The top five reasons to buy from you – make it funny if you want to.

  Tip #93 - Don’t Just Hope – ASK!

We think the best way to “buy” the most new customers for the lowest cost is to leverage the relationships you already have with your friends, family, acquaintances, and especially your current customers.

ASK FOR A REFERRAL.

Getting referrals is an incredibly effective technique for creating a steady stream of prospects and new customers. Here’s why referral-generated customers are so important:

  • Referral customers are the most cost-efficient, profitable, and the most loyal source of new business you could ever hope to have.
  • Referral customers are quicker to buy, are more reliable, are least price resistant, and are an outstanding source of more referrals!

And getting great referrals is easy – all you really have to do is ask!

Perhaps the most important word in the previous sentence is ASK. Many of our clients tell us that ‘word of mouth’ already brings a steady stream of new customers – but that they don’t do much to actively solicit that new business.

Just imagine what an incredibly powerful source of new customers a systematic method of asking for referrals and testimonials would be!

You have to ask, not just hope, for referrals.

The easiest referral system we’ve ever encountered was created by Bill Osche. (Thanks Bill!) In his Kite Loft stores, every employee hands their customer two business cards at the end of the sale, and asks, “Would you do me a favor? If you had a good time here and enjoy the kites, will you please tell a couple of friends? Thanks!” Simple and effective.

There are as many different kinds of referral systems as there are businesses. Create a system that works for you and good luck ASKING (not just hoping) for referrals!
