Tip 367 - The Only Certain Things in Life...
Dear Tip of the Weeker,
You remember that old adage, "The only certain things in life are death and taxes."
Well, it's true. Especially the part about the taxes.
Both of our sons take music lessons at the local music store. Sammy plays the drums and Joe plays the guitar. Well you can imagine our surprise when we showed up for lessons a couple of days ago and we found a note on the door of the music store that said the store was closed by the United States government and all the contents were going to be sold in public auction to pay the back taxes.
Which reminded me of a story...
In the mid-eighties my brother Steve and I didn't pay our federal witholding taxes on time. We didn't have much money, the vendors were pestering us, and we just put paying the taxes on the bottom of the list.
Well, that was a mistake.
Even though the Government hadn't been pestering us, they hadn't forgotten us either. And the Federal Government doesn't take kindly to being ignored. I will never forget going down to the Gerald R. Ford Federal Building in downtown Grand Rapids, MI and going up the elevator to Mrs. Welch's office so that she could create a payment plan for us.
Even though we had a payment plan, we still got what we called "bombs" in the mailbox from time to time. It was a letter from the IRS for $200, $600, $800...they were penalities and interest. Of course we paid them on time and we eventually paid them off.
But we learned our lesson and it's the lesson for you in this week's Tip. Pay your taxes, pay them on time, pay them in full. Do not cheat the Government. It doesn't pay, it doesn't work, they will catch up to you.
This single Tip could save you enormous amounts of heartache - I learned it the hard way, I hope you don't have to!
If you're short on money and can't pay that debt, listen to my interview with Jim Herst and then give him a call.
