Tip #386 - The Power of One

Dear Tip of the Weeker,

Here's  a  quick  Tip from the full-day copywriting class "Writing for
Retailers: Words That Sell" that Susan lead Wednesday after the Retail
Success Summit.

Write like you are talking to one person.

Yes, I know that your emails, newsletters, brochures, post cards, (and so
on) are going out to hundreds, even thousands, of readers.  But each reader
is a single individual.  Write like you are having a personal conversation
with that one reader.

The word "you" in your copy should not be the collective, plural "you", but
the singular.  Stay away from phrases like "you are all invited" or "Hi
Everyone" since these show that you are not speaking directly to the reader.

Sometimes it helps to think about a real customer - pick your favorite
customer or a typical customer and write like you are talking to that one
person.

This simple technique will work wonders for your copy!
