Tip #444 - You Can't Sell Through A Closed Door

Dear Tip of the Weeker,

Some things just get my dander up.

This is one.

Store hours sign that doesnt work

Why would anyone buy a gift certificate at this store? The gift recipient would have to rearrange their whole schedule just to redeem it.

Ladies and gents, you cannot sell your products and services if you are not open for business!

You will not be competitive if you don't keep competitive hours.

I know this is an extreme example, but too many independent retailers keep lousy hours.

Closed early (5 or 6 pm) in the evenings. Closed part of the weekend. How are people with jobs supposed to spend money at your store?

Now look, I know all the reasons to be closed. "I stayed open late last week and no one came in." or "I'm the only one working in my store."

I also know that you'll never get any more foot traffic, any extra money to hire employees, or any customer loyalty if you're closed when your customers want to buy.

My opinion: if you're arguing for short hours, you're arguing for failure.

We posted the picture above on our Facebook page this week, and a reader (who wishes to remain anonymous) sent back his photo-shopped interpretation of the sign...

The results of limiting your store hours

I certainly hope this doesn't turn out to be the case...

But unfortunately, it wouldn't surprise me.
